Cold Stone Creamery: Products & Services

Cold Stone Creamery is a group of retail ice cream shops.  These shops make their own ice cream.  Each day there are different flavors to sample.  One a customer picks out his choice of ice cream and the size of his scoop, the customer than then add at least two kinds of chips or other ingrediants to his or her ice cream.  The ice cream clerk puts the ice cream on a mixing stone and mixes the extra ingrediants into the ice cream.

There are choices between chips, nuts, candy, syrups, and just about anything one could want to add.  The store also sells ice cream cakes and ice cream to take home in larger containers.  So, each customer creates his own flavor of ice cream. The store also has frozen yogerts that can be also made into unique flavors.  Smoothies and milk shakes can also be ordered at the counter.  Our local store clerks sometimes sing a song if a tip is left in the tip jar.

The business also has an ecommerce site where customers can place orders for some of Cold Stone Creamery's products and for gift cards.  Ice cream is made in each store daily.

Cold Stone Creamery: Company Background

Donald and Susan Sutherland started the first Cold Stone Creamery in Tempe, Arizona in 1998.  The store did well, featuring a new concept where customers could make their own ice cream.  In 1997, Dan Farr convinced Cold Stone to franchise a set of stores in Alaska.  The idea was if the stores worked in Alaska, they would work any where.  The stores were successful, and today the company has over 500 stores in over 20 countries.  Cold Stone Creamery does not have outlets in every state, but they are working on it.  Their newest stores have opened this year in Brazil and Egypt.

Cold Stone Creamery: Customer Feedback & Reviews

Customer feedback at Cold Stone Creamery is mostly positive.  Customers sometimes complain about not understanding the menu and some of the choices.  The prices can be a bit higher than other shops that just sell ice cream cones.  Here is a selection of customer comments:

  • The employee's seem to enjoy their job and keep things entertaining. The girl helping us out tossed ice cream in the air and caught it again in her spoon. It was......impressive.
  • If you are the type of person who expects to receive mammoth proportions of iced cream, here you go. I ordered the small French vanilla and boy was it NOT small.
  • I had the Founder's Favorite-- fudge, pecans, brownie, caramel with coffee ice cream. All in the chocolate waffle bowl.
  • The craftsmanship was great as the server chopped and mixed all the ingredients. It's a show to see on its own.
  • I love ice cream but this stuff is comparable to a supermarket ice cream but with more frills like old stale nuts and other garnishings that taste like it's been sitting around for weeks or months.
  • It's expensive, yes, but it's *exactly* what you want, if you can decide from all of the toppings, and there are several base flavors from which to choose.  It's not Bi-Rite or Mitchell's, but it's not rocket fuel either.
  • I love this place; I dream about it sometimes. Cold Stone can be totally amazing if you choose the right combination... like tons of chocolate bars and brownies. It can be daunting to make the right combination...all that pressure!!
